The Royal Voluntary Service
The Royal Voluntary Service is a National Charity with local offices that support older people by giving time and practical help to help them get the best from life.
Every year, Royal Voluntary Service volunteers undertake some 90,000 journeys on behalf of older people. These may be trips to and from hospital or to a GP appointment. Equally, these may be trips to the shops or into town, journeys that enrich lives and really add to the pleasure of day-to-day living.
It's especially important where mobility issues can make it difficult, if not impossible, for older people to use public transport and in rural areas with limited transport services.
It's cheaper than taking a taxi and local volunteers often become friends.
Volunteers use a combination of their own cars or adapted vehicles or mini-buses, depending on the local area.
