Transport to and from hospital

Each patient should be able to get to and from the hospital in a reasonable time and in reasonable comfort without detriment to their medical condition.

The majority of patients coming to hospital for an appointment do not need professional help to do this and are able to transport themselves. Sometimes it may be difficult or inconvenient because of transport issues, but it is achievable.

If you feel you need patient transport but are unsure if you are eligible, please speak to your doctor. You can phone the Scottish Ambulance service on 0300 123 1236 who will be able to advise on the travel options available to you. If you are hard of hearing, please contact the service via text relay on 18001-03001231236. Please remember that you will be asked questions to determine your eligibility for transport each time you call.

Transport provided by the Scottish Ambulance Service, for patients with a clinical need, is free of charge and is a door to door service. Transport by other providers may require payment or a contribution and this should be clarified when arranging the journey with them.

Financial help for hospital transport costs is available for patients undergoing NHS treatment. Eligibility is related to a range of income levels or medical conditions. For full details, please visit www.nhs.uk/using-the-nhs/help-with-health-costs/healthcare-travel-costs-scheme-htcs/
